Moonchild: What exactly determines you to travel to each new destination? Lady Owl: Once your appetite for diving has awaken, it is very hard to stop. When you dive in spectacular places, you feel the urge to see all of them! I got my diving license at the Diving School in Egypt in 2008. One of the final questions in the exam was: „What are diving’s benefits?” and the answer: „Go places! Meet people! Do things!”. Back then, I laughed about it, but the reality is exactly like this. Together with diving, I also became passionate about photography, I create memories in each moment spent under the water. Moonchild: How did you choose this new travel location? Lady Owl: My first trip towards far-away destinations was to the Maldives, in 2007. One of the many attractions this island country offers is diving with the beautiful Manta Ray, a cartilaginous fish also known as „the sea devil”. Instinctively guided by curiosity, I discovered new information about this marine specie and, by mere chance, I ended up on Manta Ray Bay Resort’s website, a hotel on Yap Island. I instantly knew my next travel destination. No sooner said than done, after a thorough research, I found out that one must go through Palau Islands in order to reach Yap Island (I will talk about my holiday in Palau Islands in a separate story). Once I reached Yap, my first impression about it was that of extreme poverty. In 2008, women exhibited their naked breasts and wore skirts made of palm trees’ leaves, while men accessorized their appearance with a rag wrapped around the hips, similar to sumo fighters. This island’s most significant and visible habbit is chewing betel nut; unfortunately, the effect this habbit has over the locals’ teeth is devastating, none of them has any teeth left. Everyone spits a red juice on the ground as a result of chewing the betel nut. A meeting ritual also exists on the island, and, here and there, on the road, locations similar to small bus stations await; these are actually resting areas specially created for the meeting rituals – locals exchange betel nuts thus expressing the joy felt that their paths have crossed. The island’s capital city features some small stores, culminating with a rudimental food store. Moreover, a DVD and (not at all new) movies’ rental center, and some tiny „restaurants” – small rooms decorated with plastic tables and chairs, serving weird but delicious food - offer their services to the few tourists and visitors. Diving around this part of the world is extraordinary!!! We used to sit on our knees and wait at the cleaning station for the rays to show up and get cleaned by sanitary fish. Although for many, this may seem boring, it was precisely then when I started to nourish endless love for that primitive secluded place. I came back to Yap Island 8 years later. Moonchild: Describe in 3 essential words the first thoughts or emotions felt once you have reached your destination. Lady Owl: Amazement and curiosity took hold of me when I saw that the entire comunity was present at the airport to greet the incoming airplane (since this would only happen once a week, it was considered to be an important local event). Locals manage to intertwine purely utilitarian modernism with their traditions, but they do not become slaves of consumerism. For example, men continue to live inside a Men House – they come here before going fishing, because sleeping with their wives the night before brings bad luck. Moonchild: How did the “perfect day” unfold while on holiday? Lady Owl: Absolutely all the days spent on Yap island were perfect. Any day in which I dive is perfect. If I am under the water, even though I do not get to see anything, it is perfect. Moonchild: You leisurely discovered the new location. Which was your favourite spot? Why? Describe it in a few words. Lady Owl: The Manta Ray Bay Resort belongs to an American owner, who enrolled in the Peace Corps, went on a mission in Yap and fell in love with a local woman. Besides building this hotel, the owner anchored a ship nearby and designed a modest restaurant on board. Moreover, he is also in charge of a small brewery and produces local beer. Although at first sight, this place is not very charming and tantalizing, to me it felt cozy and pleasant, and I spent extraordinary moments there. What I most liked was the fact that locals – the dive masters – had a meal and beer on the house, as a gift from the American owner. They all gathered there after work and reveled their fantastic characters: they manifested a real interest towards the held discussions, they were good listeners, they asked questions to clarify, so any conversation was extremely pleasant and qualitative. Moonchild: Describe in 3 essential words the last thoughts or emotions felt on departure. Lady Owl: „I don’t want to leave, I don’t want to leave, I don’t want to leave!!!”, „I want to stay here.”. I was haunted by the thought of coming back to this island and I did, 8 years later. I have noticed some changes: more tiny taverns, some improvements were made to existing infrastructure, and locals no longer wait for the airplane arriving weekly at the airport... Moonchild: Now that some time has passed since this travel, what is the most often recurring thought regarding the destination you have visited? Lady Owl: Manta Rays – such splendid and fascinating animals!
