My first encounter with this beautiful sport took place in October 2015. Long sandy beaches cheerfully greeted as I commenced my new adventure. Peniche, this tiny land-stub wildly taking the plunge into the Atlantic Ocean, makes you feel at home in almost an instant. While being there, your entire body breathes in and breathes out freedom and looseness. A unique, and very complex state of mind silently intercepts you and drives you straight to a higher new level of understanding everything surrounding you. Located at about 100 kilometers away from Lisbon and about 600 kilometers away from Madrid, Peniche joyfully embraces surfers around the world and leads them towards great swells, beautiful sights, challenging waves, unforgettable memories. As the wind leisurely soothed my salty messy hair, easy steps followed my shadow in endless strolls on wide gorgeous beaches. A total disruption from my current reality occurred which projected me in a somewhat dreamy state. As days would fly by, unhurried surf lessons took place in celestial waters, significant meaningful pages were read under the friendly sun, pleasant conversations sang humble lullabies in my ears, yoga blends blissfully relaxed my inner and outer body. Suddenly, I became very aware of how far from Mother Nature we have been living. I was a mere spectator of nature’s force unraveling broken emotions and lives. Far from exhibiting any sign of discontent, people in Peniche were simply very happy to live another day next to their beloved cerulean blue skies and ocean, covered in white, foamy, rebel waves. No harm done, not a single minute wasted on miserable thoughts. The stranded Baleal invites you to strong introspection with its cosy compact houses, its simple, traditional diner and coffee places, and with its perfect panoramic views. Apart from being renowned for a terrific surfing spot, Peniche provides vivid proof of people’s closer connection to nature and all it has to offer. The colours palette ranges from snowy whites (waves’ glazing), miraculous greens (verdured shores), mind-blowing blues (skies and waters) to psychedelic violets and pinks (twilight), mellow yellows mixed with vivid oranges and reds (dawn) and opulent golden yellows (splendid sands, endless cornfields); finishing touches offering stability to this marvelous scenery incarnate in rocky browns and stony grey (nature’s sculptures). Take a moment and dream about this simple, yet spectacular place!
